Steven Gerrard has had a poor start to the season picking up two wins out of 11 Premier League matches. Villa sit just above the relegation zone on goals scored, they have nine points from a possible 33.
A club spokesman said: “We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future”.
The former Rangers manager, despite leading Rangers to their first league title in 10 years had it tough at Villa. He recorded just 13 wins in 40 games during his 11 months in charge.
Steven Gerrard said to BBC Match of the day about an hour before his sack:
"Inconsistency has cost us, that's the position we find ourselves in. I took over the team in a very similar situation. We've tried to recruit to get us out of that situation.
"I'm a fighter - it's in my DNA. I'll continue to fight unless I'm told differently."
The Villa fans complained about Gerrard having an unattractive style of play, They continually cheered on 'Anti-Gerrard chants' during the match against Fulham at the Craven Cottage and even before then.
Steven Gerrard signed some high profile players which were meant to at least bring some level of stability into the team, one of which was Phillipe Coutinho, the former Liverpool star was expected to become the 'chief chance-creator'. He had a bright start but his form and rate of his attacking returns gradually dropped resulting to the drought of goals in the Villa team.

The former Liverpool and England midfielder will feel displeased about this one as it puts him in an unfamiliar territory. He had a successful career at Liverpool and also did well for the England National team, not forgetting Rangers winning the Scottish Premiership for the first time in 10 years under his tutelage.
Steven Gerrard becomes the fourth manager to be sacked in the Premier league after Bournemouth fired Scott Parker, Chelsea parted ways with Thomas Tuchel who was replaced by Brighton's Graham Potter, and the most recent of all which was Bruno Lage of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Aston Villa will be in search of a new manager now, here are the odds of any of these managers taking the mantle at Villa park.
Mauricio Pochettino - 11/4
Michael Beale - 9/4
Sean Dyche - 11/2
Unai Emery - 6/1
Thomas Frank - 33/1
Thomas Tuchel - 33/1
